Halong Bay On Land in Vietnam is a tourist destination including the World Natural and Cultural Heritage listed by UNESCO. This Heritage is located in Ninh Binh province in north of the country. Many monuments and landscapes have also been added by the Vietnamese government to the list of particularly important National Heritage, such as the destination of Tam Coc – Bich Dong, Bai Dinh Pagoda, the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, the eco – spiritual region of Trang An… belonging to the Halong Bay On Land.
 
Halong Bay On Land covers a very large swampy area with various rocky landscapes, limestone mountains, the ecosystem where the flora and fauna are very varied, lakes, flooded rice land, and countless river routes offering its visitors a special impression. Halong Bay on Land has several beautiful caves to discover like: Thien Ha (Galaxy Cave), Thien Thanh (Cave of Blue Sky), Tien (Fairy Cave), Vai Gioi (Prayers to Heaven Grotto), Thuy Cung (Aquarium Grotto), Phat (Buddha Cave), Tam Coc (Three Caves), Trang An caves … and several archaeological sites of big values such as Hang Me, Hang Boi, Hang Trong, May Oc….Furthermore, this are still many historical, cultural monuments in the ancient capital of Hoa Lu dating from 938 to 1009, many other historical relics of Vietnamese dynasties such as: Dinh, Le, Ly and Tran, palace of Vu Lam, Jade pagoda, the temples of Dinh Tien Hoang, Le Dai Hanh, Thai Vi …without forgetting the magnificent bird sanctuaries in the Thung Nham valley, Thung Nang valley or Sun valley…
 
Halong Bay on Land, with the absolute consensus of the World Heritage Committee, was officially added to the list of World Heritages in Doha on June 23, 2014. Especially, Halong Bay On Land is the first World Heritage Site in Vietnam satisfying two important criteria of Nature and Culture at the same time to be classified as Natural and Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Halong Bay on Land in Vietnam also remains the only one Heritage in South East Asia which has this title. 

Halong Bay On Land – Geographical position:

Halong Bay On Land is located at 3 km in south of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, 7 km west of the city of Ninh Binh or 96 km in south of Hanoi. The central region of the Heritage is Trang An – Tam Coc having an area of ​​over 6172 hectares, belonging to the specially protected area of ​​all the ancient capital of Hoa Lu – Trang An having an area of ​​12.252 hectares.

World Natural Heritage:

Halong Bay On Land, with its limestone mountains system dating from about 250 million years and all orogenic activities, tectonic geological history, erosion and climate change for long periods, preserves hundreds of valleys, caves, lakes and marshes that keep most typical geological formation of the country. There are many ecosystems of flooded forests, forests of limestone mountains and historical monuments related to the history of the ancient capital of Hoa Lu in 10th century.
 
With the exceptional values ​​of the natural landscape, tectonic activities of the geology, history and culture, UNESCO classified Halong Bay On Land as the Natural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
 
Halong Bay on Land is one of the places that have the most beautiful karsts landscapes in the world. This landscape is covered with imposing mountain rocks up to 200 meters high, surrounded by mountains and rivers connected by a system of canals dug by erosion over time. The limestone mountains, river, forest and sky here create a natural living, harmonious world…and full of charm. This is a very special place where culture is in contact with the grandeur of the natural world.
 
Halong Bay On Land is famous for the karsts formation scattered of series of permanent rivers and flooded valleys seasonally. There are many beautiful caves in this area as Thien Ha (Galaxy Cave), Thien Thanh (Cave of Blue Sky), Tien (Fairy Cave), Vai Gioi (Prayers to Heaven Grotto), Thuy Cung (Aquarium Grotto), Phat (Buddha Cave), Tam Coc (Three Caves), Trang An caves…This region reflects the last stage of the evolution of karsts formation in humid tropical climate. Geological and geomorphologic diversity results from the geological activities lasting hundreds of millions of years from Triassic to Quaternary. In this moment, huge karsts massifs collapsed. These major geological events created the pristine and charming mountains, sedimentary valleys, rivers and caves in Halong Bay On Land.

World Cultural Heritage:

Halong Bay On Land retains a remarkable value satisfying criteria to be a World Cultural Heritage. Trang An demonstrates the perfect adaptation of man to changes in climate, geography and historical environment of the Earth. In this heritage, we can prove a fascinating way how man is able to adapt to changes in the nature, the climate and in geology of our earth for at least from 30,000 years.
 
More than 30 prehistoric archaeological sites have been discovered. Research results show how prehistoric people were adapting to major changes. For at least 23,000 years, some civilizations have successively developed in this region, from the Paleolithic through the Neolithic periods to the Iron and Bronze Age. At least 3,000 years ago, in particular conditions where only the limestone is available, prehistoric men have been able to use it as work tools in Halong Bay On Land.
 
The continuous use of ceramics from the beginning of history in Halong Bay On Land shows that a center of ceramic different from many other centers in Vietnam existed here. Masanari Nishimura, a Japanese research, after archaeological studies, confirmed: 5000-6000 years ago, there was a big earthquake here and prehistoric Vietnamese people were able to adapt to many changes of nature to develop and to maintain their cultural value in Halong Bay On Land.
 
Until the 10th century, in the Hoa Lu Valley, residents of Halong Bay On Land have established a thriving civilization being in harmony with nature and the weather. The national hero named Dinh Bo Linh, after having reunited the 12 rebels of governors, ordered to build here his kingdom by making protective walls around the capital thanks to rocky mountains. Vietnamese feudal court was born here, independent and prosperous, creating a period of prosperity and sovereignty of the country with a succession of dynasties as Dinh, Le and Ly…with many historic landmarks / reunification of the kingdom, fight against Chinese people several times and the Cham people and the construction of the capital in Hanoi today.
 
In the 13th century, the Tran dynasty chose again HaLong Bay On Land to build the fortress of Vu Lam as a military base to prepare the forces contributing largely to the final victory against the Mongols. This is also the place where the kings of the Tran dynasty were converted in monks to develop Buddhism in Vietnam.
 
The ancient capital of Hoa Lu today retains great historical, cultural and tourism values with many monuments such as: the temple worshiping the King Dinh Tien Hoang, the temple worshiping King Le Dai Hanh, temple worshiping the princess Kim Phat, Nha Tru pagoda, pagoda of Kim Ngan, pagoda of Duyen Ninh, temple of Yen Trach,  pagoda of Ba Ngo, the temple of Tran,  pagoda of Bai Dinh, Hoa Lu cave, cave of Thien Ton…Thanks to these values, UNESCO recognized Halong Bay On Land as Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How to get there?

Halong Bay on Land is located in south of Hanoi with 2h30 drive. In fact, you can also get there from Halong Bay (4 hours drive), the Mai Chau Valley (4 hours drive), Pu Luong National Park (2 hours drive)…
